Health Sec Sajid Javid told Sky News that even if Omicron turns out to make vaccine less effective it will make a ‘small impact’.

Mr Javid also stressed the importance of getting vaccinated and having a booster jab, for as many people as possible.

Mandatory mask-wearing should come into force from Tuesday he added, and people will be required to wear a face mask on public transport and in shops.

He has stressed that he hopes the new measures will be “temporary” and the government can remove them ‘within weeks’.
